Urglaawe

Deitsch -- Pennsylvania German -- Heathenry

It is with a heavy heart that I provide notice to the community of the passing of my kinsman, Daniel Riegel, whose life was claimed by an accident on Monday, October 10.

Many of you know Dan through Distelfink Sippschaft, and others of you will remember him as the violinist in the band Norsewind. Dan was a student of mine at Kutztown University, where he excelled in his pursuit of the Deitsch (Pennsylvania German) language. He was dedicated to the Deitsch language and culture, to his music, to Urglaawe, and to his beloved Anna, with whom he was looking forward to building a life together. He had recently officiated his first Urglaawe ceremony at Erntfescht, and he was developing new ideas for enhancing our folks’ experiences. He was writing new lyrics in Deitsch in order to create songs with Heathen themes based on our folk experience.

Although he is now in the caring realm of Fraa Holle, he remains loved and respected within our community. We will continue the work that he has begun and we will treasure our memories and all the wonders that he inspired in us all.

His family will be holding a memorial service for him in Riegelsville, PA, this coming Saturday, and (with their blessing and likely also with their participation) Distelfink Sippschaft will be holding an Urglaawe memorial service for him on Saturday, October 22, in Lenhartsville, PA, at 4:00 PM. Anyone is welcomed to come to pay respects. In the near future, we will also be placing  a memorial stone to Dan Distelfink’s cemetery grounds in Mahoning, PA.

Please contact me for more information regarding the memorial ceremony via e-mail at schreiwer@urglaawe.org.

Hail to you all.
